The NYPD cracked open a sophisticated identity theft ring that ruined the credit of 6,000 victims and rang up $15 million in fraudulent bank credit card charges.
The scam was one of the largest operations of its kind.The thieves managed to get their hands on thousands of credit cards that were legitimately issued in the victims' names, but were intercepted before they arrived in their mailboxes.
The thieves then called the credit card companies - using a legal device called a SpoofCard to disguise their voice and phone number - and activate the credit cards. Read much more here.
