Here we go again. WSVN out of Miami has reported that police are searching for a thief who stole a hard drive containing confidential information from a South Florida hospital.
Officials said the hard drive held people's driver's license information who visited Jackson Memorial Hospital between May 2007 and March 2008.
When a visitor wants to see a patient in the hospital, identification must be shown. That ID is then swiped and stored onto a computer.
Investigators are looking into the incident, but they believe the thief was more interested in the hard drive itself rather than the information it contained. JMH officials said the hard drive did not contain social security numbers.
Police are searching for the person responsible for this crime but Jackson Health's System Senior VP/CFO said anyone could have stolen the hard drive. "You know, there are all sorts of people who have theoretically legitimate access, you know, facilities, maintenance, IT, you name it, so even contractors, for instance, laying cable or something," said Dennis Proul.
Officials urge anyone who visited JMH between the affected dates to place a fraud alert on their credit file to alert creditors to contact them before opening new accounts. They can call Equifax at 1-800-525-6285, Experian at 1-888-397-3742 or Trans Union Corp. at 1-800-680-7289.
About a year ago, 2.1 million patients had their records stolen from the University of Miami, including 47,000 patients who had their credit card information stolen. JMH said these two instances are not related.
