Beware of eBay phishing scam circulating

Over the weekend I received a couple of email & text scams.

One was an eBay phishing scam that claimed someone had a question about one of my items listed on eBay.

Trouble is, I don't have any items for sale on eBay.

But, scammers don't care about that because they send out so many emails they know they get lucky! Some will land in email boxes of those who do sell items on eBay.

And if they happen to land in email boxes of those who don't have items for sale eBay -they know that some people will find the email curious, and maybe enough to be tempted to click on the embedded links so they can investigate the email further.

Don't click on the link. Rather, send it to eBay so they can track where it came from.

Here's the email:

I reported it to eBay to; spoof@ebay.com

...here is the eBay response on this email scam:

Thanks for forwarding the suspicious email you received.

The email is a spoof, also known as a phishing, email. (That's
"phishing," as in "fishing" for personal information.) It didn't come
from eBay. Our Trust & Safety team is working to disable any websites it
links to.

Remember that you can always check the My Messages section of My eBay to
see if a message from us is legitimate. Copies of any emails we send you
about the status of your account or a change in your account information
will be displayed in My Messages. This is especially helpful since many
spoof emails try to convince you that your account is in jeopardy.

If you've given out personal information in a spoof email or website,
you need to take steps to protect your identity right away. For more
information about what to do, go to:

If you'd like to learn more about how to spot a spoof email and stay
safe online, go to:

Keep those reports coming -- you're helping protect the global Internet
community!

Our Trust & Safety team works closely with Internet Service
Providers to shut down fraudulent sites. We also send your reports to
Web browser companies so that they can develop tools to identify spoof
sites.

The text (sms) mail scam was a text message that was marked urgent and appeared to come from my cellphone provider. This was the second time I received this type of text scam known as "smishing" and voice mail scams as "vishing". For more on vishing see earlier entry: "Vishing" scam turning popular...

For more tips to avoid phishing scams, smishing, skimming, etc. see the scams/hoaxes category, or search archives on blog.
